Drilling Activity for Monday, August 17, 2009
Well: APS Cholla Pilot CO2 Well
Rig: Bearcat Rig 2
Activity: Align Rotary; Drill Mousehole and Rathole; Pick up workstring and drill cement.
The wellbore was circulated until fluid returns were clean and the 9-5/8" casing was pressure-tested to 1401 psig for 30 minutes with a loss rate of 4.4 percent (Good Test). Cement inside the casing was drilled to the casing shoe at 955 ft (drill pipe measurement). Mud materials were added to the drilling fluid (water) to convert the system to a drilling mud (Clean Faze). Operations were suspended for 3 hours while the rig made repairs to the possum belly (crack in inlet from flowline). Drilling progressed from 955 to 968 feet (10 feet below casing shoe). A formation integrity test to 11.3 lb/gal equivalent mud weight was performed.

After the test was performed, the rig was instructed to resume drilling. The driller failed to open the pipe rams after the test and attempted to circulate and rotate the pipe, causing the pipe rams to become dislodged within the ram cavity of the blowout preventers (BOPs). The problem was diagnosed further and the ram bonnets were opened to inspect the rams. Replacement rams were installed in the BOPs and the pipe rams were pressure-tested to 250 psi (low) and 1000 psi (high). The workstring was lowered into the wellbore to 968 ft. Drilling resumed and continued from 968 to 978 ft.

Observations
  • Daily activities summarized to 6:00 a.m. August 18.

Drilling Activity for Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Well: APS Cholla Pilot CO2 Well
Rig: Bearcat Rig 2
Activity: Drill 8-1/2-inch hole.
Drilling continued from 978 ft to 1,022 ft. A leakoff test was conducted to test the casing shoe and indicated a fracture pressure of 10.7 lb/gal mud weight equivalent. Drilling continued from 1,022 ft to 1,405 ft. An inclination survey was obtained at 1,365 ft (1 deg) and drilling resumed. Drilling progressed to 1,659 ft.
Observations
  • Daily activities summarized to 6:00 a.m. on August 19.
  • Drilling Fluid Properties: Mud weight = 9.6 lb/gal; Plastic viscosity = 8 cp; Yield point = 16 lb/100 ft2; Filter loss = 4.0 cc/30 min.
  • Chlorides in drilling mud increased to 125,000 parts per million due to drilling of anhydrites, salts.
