Drilling Activity for August 5, 2009
Well: APS Cholla Pilot CO2 Well
Rig: WDC Rig 161
Activity: Drilling 12-1/4" Surface Hole
Wireline pipe recovery equipment and personnel arrived at the site. WDC ceased fluid circulation and retrieved the air line from inside the kelly and drill string. A freepoint survey was conducted to determine where the drill string was stuck. The survey indicated the following: 100% free down to 370 ft; 50% free down to 430 ft; 0% free from 435 ft (bit @ 482 ft). Downhole fishing tools were ordered from Weatherford. The workstring was unscrewed (blind backoff) and retrieved in order to add 10 feet of drill pipe and reposition the kelly in the hole. The drill string was lowered into the wellbore and screwed into the top drill collar at 330 ft. WDC rigged up a centrifugal pump to circulate water through the bore of the workstring. Attempts were made to work the string free while circulating water at high rate (estimated at 400 gal/min), with no success. Fluid circulation stopped and WDC displaced the water from the drill string with intermittent cycles of air. The air in the wellbore expanded as it exited into the annular space above 482 feet, displacing water ahead of it. This action successfully removed differential pressure in the wellbore and freed up the workstring. The workstring was rotated and reciprocated while the wellbore was circulated to clean it up. The hole was reamed to bottom (534 ft) and drilling operations resumed. Drilling progressed from 540 ft to 596 ft at an average rate of penetration (ROP) of 6.6 ft/hr.
Observations
  • Daily activities summarized to 6:00 am.
  • Drilling measurements are referenced from the kelly bushing (KB) of Bearcat drilling rig (12 ft above grade level).
  • Conductor pipe: 14" OD, set at 47 ft below the KB.
  • Mud loggers indicate 100% sand at 596 ft (Coconino formation).
  • Water losses to formation: 430 bbl/24 hrs; Cumulative: 1570 bbl
